PIVOT: Blueprint for Change

PIVOT: Blueprint for Change

Avente Consulting, in collaboration with UOB-SMU AEI executed SMU’s first ever SMU’s First Virtual SME Symposium and Business Case Competition. On 7 October 2020, the club put together a series of panel discussions to take help SME owners and students draw up blueprints surrounding Digitalisation and Regionalisation to help SMEs recover from the downturn that the global pandemic has brought about.

The virtual event saw nearly 300 attendees across tertiary education institutions, SMEs and solution providers. It also acted as a catalyst for conversations between many budding minds and businesses to bring about fresh ideas about how the drivers of Singapore’s economy can adopt technology to survive the pandemic. Participants also had the opportunity to interact with esteemed industry veterans from Facebook, Google, Aspire, Shopify and Adobe.

We were honoured to have Dr. Ang Ser Keng (Member of the Board of Governors and Director of UOB-SMU AEI) to give the opening address, shedding light on the importance of adopting digitalisation and regionalisation in today’s economic landscape. He also noted that the event was vital to connect students and businesses to help the pivot towards a brighter future.

Avente’s second executive committee would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Dr Ang, Ms Vera Tan (Senior Assistant Director of UOB-SMU AEI) and Ms Chen Shan Shan (Manager), for their unwavering support, guidance and patience while the team ventured into uncharted waters to organise an event this large for the first time. We are also thankful for everyone who joined us, supported us to make PIVOT possible.

PIVOT participants were treated to an insightful discussion between Samarth Bansal – Transferwise, Nitin Garg – Facebook & Nicolas Zurstrassen – Google, where they discussed the key trends of digitalisation, the impact of COVID-19 and how undergrads and business owners can adapt to achieve an optimum future state.

After, participants could choose between two breakout rooms, hosted by either Emily Wong – Adobe, to help participants prepare themselves for the digital world with digital marketing tips, or by Samath Bansal – Transferwise and Joel Leong – Aspire, to help budding entrepreneurs and business owners learn more about expanding their businesses across borders.

The highlight of PIVOT was the finals of the Inter-Varsity Case Competition where we saw five teams tackle a case by FJ Benjamin, a regional lifestyle and fashion distributor. The winning team presented an innovative solution surrounding the two pillars of PIVOT that would not only raise the bottom-line of FJ Benjamin but could also upskill their employees.

PIVOT: Blueprint for Change would not have been possible without our sponsors from FJ Benjamin and CREATIVE Technology as well as our partner universities from NUS 180 Degrees Consulting and SIM Business Strategy.

We would also like to thank our event chairs, department leaders, organising committee members and exco who put this event together, to create a platform for conversations between students, industry leaders and business owners to bring about new ideas to improve the SME landscape in Singapore.
